If you’re asking your phone, “Does microblading hurt?”, here’s the honest answer: most clients describe microblading as mild discomfort, not pain. With proper numbing cream, the procedure is very tolerable for the vast majority of people.
I’m Kody, owner of Bonita Beauty Bar in Cranebrook, and I’ve performed over 600 brow tattoo procedures in my 15 years of experience. I’ve worked with clients who have high pain tolerance and clients who are terrified of needles—and I can tell you exactly what to expect when it comes to pain during microblading.
In this guide, I’ll explain what microblading feels like, how numbing works, what affects your pain level, and how to make your appointment as comfortable as possible.
Quick Answer: Does Microblading Hurt?
Pain level: 2-4 out of 10 for most clients
What microblading feels like:
- Light scratching or scraping sensation
- Mild pressure on the brow area
- Slight stinging in some areas
- Most clients say it’s less painful than eyebrow waxing
Pain management at Bonita Beauty Bar:
- Topical numbing cream is applied before and during the procedure
- Two-step numbing process for maximum comfort
- Regular check-ins throughout the appointment
- Breaks if needed
Factors that affect pain:
- Your personal pain tolerance
- Time in your menstrual cycle (hormones affect sensitivity)
- Caffeine and alcohol consumption before the appointment
- Stress and anxiety levels
- Quality and application of numbing cream

What Does Microblading Actually Feel Like?
Let me be completely honest with you about the sensation:
Initial numbing cream application: You won’t feel anything during this phase. I apply numbing cream to your brows and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before starting. Your brows will feel tingly and numb.
First few strokes: You’ll feel a light scratching sensation, like someone drawing on your skin with a fine pen. It’s not sharp or stabbing—more like a scraping feeling. Most clients say, “Oh, that’s it?”
During the procedure: As I continue working, you may feel:
- Mild pressure as I stretch the skin
- Light scratching with each stroke
- Occasional slight stinging in more sensitive areas (inner brow, arch)
- A warming or tingling sensation
Most uncomfortable areas:
- Inner brow (closest to nose): Slightly more sensitive
- Arch area: Can be a bit more tender
- Tail of brow: Usually the least sensitive
Least uncomfortable areas:
- Outer brow and tail: Typically very comfortable
Throughout the procedure, I reapply numbing cream as needed. The second application (after the skin is open) works even better than the first, so if you feel any discomfort early on, it usually decreases as we continue.
How Clients Describe Microblading Pain
Here’s what my clients at Bonita Beauty Bar typically say:
“It feels like someone scratching my skin with a fingernail” This is the most common description. It’s a surface-level sensation, not deep pain.
“It’s less painful than getting my eyebrows waxed” Many clients are surprised that microblading is more comfortable than waxing!
“I felt slight pressure and scraping, but no real pain” The numbing cream does its job well for most people.
“Some areas stung a bit, but it was totally manageable” A few sensitive spots are regular, but they’re brief and tolerable.
“I was so nervous, but it was nothing like I expected” Anxiety beforehand is often worse than the actual procedure!
“I could feel it, but it wasn’t painful—just weird” The sensation is unusual, but not unbearable.
Pain Scale: What to Expect
Here’s a realistic pain scale based on my 600+ procedures:
0-1/10: No pain. About 10% of clients feel virtually nothing due to an excellent numbing response.
2-3/10: Mild discomfort. About 60% of clients fall into this category. You think the scratching sensation, but it’s not painful—just slightly uncomfortable.
4-5/10: Moderate discomfort. About 25% of clients experience this level. You definitely feel it, and some areas sting, but it’s manageable, and you can easily sit through the procedure.
6-7/10: Uncomfortable but tolerable. About 5% of clients are in this range, usually due to high sensitivity, poor numbing response, or hormonal factors. We take breaks and reapply numbing as needed.
8-10/10: Very painful. Extremely rare (less than 1%). Usually due to specific medical conditions, medications, or extreme sensitivity. In these cases, we can stop and reschedule or discuss alternative techniques.
Most clients (85%) rate microblading pain at 2-4 out of 10.
How Numbing Cream Works
Understanding the numbing process helps you know what to expect:
Step 1: Initial numbing (before procedure)
I apply topical numbing cream to your brows and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. This numbs the surface of your skin.
What you’ll feel:
- Tingling sensation
- Slight cooling feeling
- Gradual numbness
Step 2: Secondary numbing (during procedure)
After I’ve made the initial strokes and your skin is open, I apply a second layer of numbing cream. This penetrates deeper and provides stronger numbing.
What you’ll feel:
- Increased numbness
- Less sensation with each stroke
- Greater comfort as we continue
Why the two-step process works: The first numbing cream works on intact skin. The second application (on open skin) penetrates deeper and provides significantly better numbing. This is why most clients feel less discomfort as the appointment progresses, not more.
What Affects Your Pain Level?
Not everyone experiences microblading the same way. Here’s what influences your pain:
1. Personal Pain Tolerance
Some people naturally have higher pain tolerance than others. If you generally handle pain well, you’ll likely find microblading very comfortable.
2. Menstrual Cycle and Hormones
Avoid booking during your period! Hormonal fluctuations make you more sensitive to pain.
Best time to book:
- Week 2 of your cycle (after your period ends)
- Mid-cycle, when oestrogen is higher
Worst time to book:
- During your period
- Week before your period (PMS week)
3. Caffeine and Alcohol
Avoid caffeine 24 hours before your appointment. Caffeine increases sensitivity and can make you feel more pain.
Avoid alcohol 24-48 hours before. Alcohol thins your blood, increases bleeding, and reduces the numbing effectiveness.
4. Stress and Anxiety
The more anxious you are, the more pain you’ll perceive. Stress hormones heighten sensitivity.
How to reduce Anxiety:
- Listen to music or a podcast during the procedure
- Practice deep breathing
- Remember that most clients say it’s much easier than expected
- Trust your technician (I’ve done this 600+ times!)
5. Skin Sensitivity
If you have naturally sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or rosacea, you may be more sensitive during microblading.
6. Medications
Some medications affect pain perception or numbing effectiveness:
- Blood thinners (increase bleeding, reduce numbing)
- Certain antidepressants can affect pain perception)
- Retinoids (make skin more sensitive)
Let me know about any medications during your consultation.
How to Minimise Pain During Microblading
Want the most comfortable experience possible? Follow these tips:
Before Your Appointment:
✅ Avoid caffeine for 24 hours before
✅ Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours before
✅ Get a good night’s sleep
✅ Eat a meal 1-2 hours before (don’t come on an empty stomach)
✅ Take paracetamol 30 minutes before if you’re nervous (avoid ibuprofen—it thins blood)
✅ Book during the best time in your cycle (avoid your period)
✅ Stay hydrated in the days leading up
❌ Don’t drink coffee in the morning
❌ Don’t take blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen)
❌ Don’t book during your period
❌ Don’t come stressed or rushed
During Your Appointment:
✅ Communicate with me if you feel discomfort
✅ Take deep breaths
✅ Listen to music or a podcast
✅ Close your eyes and relax
✅ Let me know if you need a break
❌ Don’t tense up (it makes it worse)
❌ Don’t hold your breath
❌ Don’t be afraid to speak up
After Your Appointment:
Your brows may feel tender for a few hours, like a mild sunburn. This is normal and fades quickly.
Microblading vs Other Brow Procedures: Pain Comparison
Microblading: 2-4/10 Light scratching sensation, very tolerable with numbing.
Ombre/Powder Brows: 3-5/10 Slightly more uncomfortable than microblading because it covers more surface area, but still very manageable.
Combination Brows: 3-5/10 Similar to ombre—more work means slightly more sensation, but numbing keeps it comfortable.
Eyebrow Waxing: 4-6/10 Many clients say waxing hurts more than microblading!
Eyebrow Threading: 5-7/10 Definitely more painful than microblading for most people.
Eyebrow Tattooing (old-school permanent): 6-8/10 Traditional tattoo machines are more painful than microblading blades.
What If I Have a Low Pain Tolerance?
If you’re genuinely worried about pain, here’s what I recommend:
1. Book a Consultation First
Come in, see the salon, meet me, and ask all your questions. Familiarity reduces Anxiety.
2. Take Paracetamol Before Your Appointment
30-60 minutes before the event, take paracetamol (not ibuprofen). This takes the edge off.
3. Bring Headphones
Listen to music, an audiobook, or a podcast to distract yourself.
4. Use a Stress Ball
Squeezing something during the procedure can help manage discomfort.
5. Communicate with Me
Tell me you’re nervous! I’ll check in more frequently, take breaks if needed, and reapply numbing cream as often as necessary.
Nervous about microblading? Book a consultation at Bonita Beauty Bar, Cranebrook, and I’ll answer all your questions and put your mind at ease.
Frequently Asked Questions About Microblading Pain
Is microblading more painful than a tattoo?
No! Microblading is significantly less painful than traditional tattooing because:
- The blade is much finer than a tattoo needle
- We only work in the upper dermis (not as deep)
- Numbing cream is very effective on the brow area
Can I take painkillers before microblading?
Yes, paracetamol is OK. Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, and other blood thinners.
What if the numbing cream doesn’t work on me?
This is extremely rare, but if it happens, we can:
- Apply additional numbing cream
- Take breaks
- Reschedule if you’re genuinely uncomfortable
Will my brows hurt after the procedure?
Most clients feel no pain after microblading. Your brows may feel slightly tender for a few hours, like mild sunburn, but it’s not painful.
Does the touch-up appointment hurt as much?
Most clients say the touch-up (6-8 weeks later) is more comfortable than the initial appointment because:
- You know what to expect (less Anxiety)
- There’s less work to do
- Your skin has healed
Can I use numbing cream at home before coming in?
No, please don’t. Over-the-counter numbing creams aren’t as effective and can interfere with the professional-grade numbing I use.
